Remarkable Shandong| Young guy injects vitality into an old craft

Xu Zhengyi, Founder of Dezhou Municipal Intangible Heritage Workshop:

I have been interested in stone and wood since I was a child. At the age of 19, I met a wooden pipe maker and began to learn carving from him. I have been engaged in wood carving for 14 years now.

In 2014, I returned to Yucheng to start my own business, because I like wood carving industry. At the same time, there are a lot of jujube tress in my hometown. Jujube, as a good carving material, because it is very hard. Meanwhile, the jujube industry can promote the development of cultural industry in my hometown, so I decided to focus on jujube wood carving.

In 2018, the market demand increased, the existing productivity can not cope with our current market demand. So we have expanded: recruited many carving masters from the south of China, and improved the technical level. We also expanded multiple live e-commerce sales channels, so the annual sales reached about 5 million Yuan.

This is a Chinese teaching AIDS developed this year, the process is particularly complex, and all are handmade inlays. It is particularly popular in the e-commerce platform.

In 2022, our company was awarded the Dezhou Municipal intangible Heritage Workshop. This year, I was honored one of the top 100 entrepreneurs in Dezhou City. It is an affirmation of our cultural industry and youth entrepreneurship.

Next, we will develop a cultural tourism project featuring Dayu culture and national culture, so that more people can learn about  Yucheng through cultural and creative products.
